About Us

What We Do

Effective communication is key—for individuals and organizations alike. Unfortunately, in the rush of meetings, deadlines and to-do lists, communication can suffer. And when communications are less effective than they should be, organizations can suffer, too.

We can help.

We create and write grant proposals, articles, public relations materials, and technical documents, to name a few. We also develop comprehensive plans that allow organizations to grow, adapt, and thrive. In 2016, we expanded our business to include a publishing company specializing in quality works of fiction and non-fiction for a wide range of audiences.

Who We Are

The Two Herons partnership of Don Kaufman and Cecilia Berg dates to 1987, when we realized we had much to offer in the areas of written communications and long-range planning. In 1988, we formalized our business in a limited-liability partnership that serves non-profit organizations, community groups, and businesses.

Don Kaufman

A Pittsburgh native, Don is a born educator with an abiding love for the natural world. He spent more than 50 years in education (43 at Miami University), teaching at all grade levels from elementary through university and post-graduate, and his science and environmental workshops for elementary teachers garnered him national and international recognition. With Cecilia Berg, he co-authored The Biosphere: Protecting Our Global Environment, an award-winning environmental textbook for college students. Throughout his career, Don earned numerous university, national, and international honors and awards. After retiring from classroom teaching, he continued to educate as the Director of Miami University’s Hefner Museum of Natural History.

Don has served as a consultant or reviewer to such groups as the National Geographic Society (Washington, DC); the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development (Washington, DC); the Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science (Davenport, Iowa); Northwest Community College (Powell, WY); the Glen Helen Institute for Ecology (Yellow Springs, Ohio); and the Fundacion Mexicana para la Educacion Ambiental or FUNDEA (Mexico City).

In addition to his work with Two Herons, Don is the Executive Director of The Oxford Society, a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization he and his wife, Patricia, founded in 2003.

Cecilia Berg

A Cincinnati native, Cecilia is a writer and editor with a passion for nature, literature, and the art and craft of writing. With Don Kaufman, she co-authored The Biosphere: Protecting Our Global Environment, an award-winning environmental textbook for college students. During her 30-year career at Miami University—the last 16 years spent at the University’s Hefner Museum of Natural History—Cecilia wrote successful grant proposals totaling in excess of $4 million to support teacher workshops, museum projects (including lectures and exhibits), and museum renovations and updates. In 2009, she brought The Big Read to Oxford with a significant grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Cecilia has served as a consultant or reviewer to such groups as the Miami University’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in environmental sciences; researchers in the departments of psychology and zoology, Miami University; the Association of Ecosystem Research Centers; the Forest Park Environmental Awareness and Recycling Program; and the Department of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati.

In addition to her work with Two Herons, Cecilia is the President of the Board of Directors for The Oxford Society, a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization that promotes environmental education and conservation efforts both in the United States (at the Salt Creek Nature Sanctuary in Franklin County, Indiana) and internationally (at Tortuguero, Costa Rica).
